ISLAMABAD: Another animal, a wolf, has died at the Marghazar Zoo on Sunday, which is probably sixth animal to die due to alleged negligence by the zoo staff this year.
The wolf’s body was sent to the laboratory for a post-mortem on Monday.
The zoo is yet to take action against concerned employees for the death of two zebras, two urials and an ostrich this year.
Talking about the deaths at the zoo, Capital Development Authority Member Environment Sanullah Aman said he is going to take action against the concerned officials. “The deaths of six animals this year is alarming for me and I will make sure the inquiries into the deaths are completed soon,” he said.
Mr Aman added that he had suspended zoo supervisor Fahad Mustafa and served a show cause notice to the veterinary doctor.
According to sources, the animals were not properly cared for. They said concerned officers including the doctor were not taking interest in their jobs. “There should be proper audit for the food being given to the animals,” a CDA official said.
Marghazar Zoo opened in 1978 and has been criticised for the conditions under which it keeps animals. At present, the zoo is home to 824 birds of 42 species and 90 animals.
Protests were held across the world against the living conditions of Kavaan, the lone elephant, in the zoo.
However, Mr Aman said the zoo will be upgraded according to international standards and that an expression of interest from firms has been called for.
